Stan Stumbo was the Chief Naval Architect at Washington State Ferries from 1988 to March 2000. In that position he was responsible for all engineering work on new construction, refurbishment and modifications to vessels of the WSF Fleet. Prior to WSF, he was Vice President, Engineering at MERIT Systems, Inc. in Bremerton and, from 1980 to 1986, Stan was a Vice President of Nickum & Spaulding Associates, the noted ship design firm in Seattle. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Washington.

Stan graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1960 and served in destroyer operations before attending the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey where he earned a Master's Degree in Marine Mechanical Engineering. In subsequent assignments, he served as an Engineering Duty Officer, as Asst. Project Engineer of the nuclear refueling of the aircraft carrier ENTERPRISE, then in Washington, D.C. in hydrofoil and cruiser ship design and Navy overhaul scheduling, and as a shipyard manager of the overhauls of the aircraft carriers RANGER and CORAL SEA. He completed his Navy career as Design Superintendent at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, then left the Navy to pursue a civilian career. In 1992, Stan was named Government Engineer of the Year by the Puget Sound Engineering Council.
